HEAD AND NECK ULTRASOUND COURSE INCLUSIVE OF THYROID AND PARATHYROID

Course description

SUMMARY

The course aims to provide participants with a solid foundation in diagnostic ultrasound in the head and neck area in clinical practice. It targets both beginners and seasoned practitioners looking to enhance their ultrasound expertise. Via limiting the number of participants the program offers an individually tailored learning experience, ensuring a quality educational environment for effective knowledge transfer.

WHY ULTRASOUND

Ultrasound has emerged as an important radiological diagnostic tool in several medical and surgical specialties. Ultrasound can provide detailed anatomical information about the head and neck area and is the first-line examination method for neck masses, lymph nodes, salivary gland, and thyroid nodules. Consequently, it is a valuable complement to the clinical examination and preoperative planning and is essential in thyroid investigations.

TO WHOM

The course is aimed at residents and specialists in ear-nose-throat and other specialties that perform head and neck ultrasound such as endocrinologists, paediatricians, radiologists and others. The course is aimed at both experienced doctors who aim to improve their ultrasound skills and beginners who are interested in getting started with ultrasound in their clinical practice.

OBJECTIVE

By the end of the training, participants will know the indications for ultrasound of the neck andwill understand the strengths, weaknesses and limitations ofultrasound of the head and neck. The participants gain the knowledgeand skills needed to independently perform basic ultrasoundexaminations of the head and neck.

STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

The course includes a broad theoretical review, encompassing ultrasound physics, settings, knobology, and sonoanatomy (SWEEPS), providing an overview of various normal and pathological ultrasound findings in the neck. An important component of the education covers thyroid diseases and the EU-TIRADS classification. It also explores how ultrasound is utilized in needle biopsies, injection treatments, and surgical procedures.

Aligned with the EFSUMB level 1 curriculum, this course focuses on enhancing competency through hands-on training sessions, comprising over 50% of the program duration. Under the guidance of experienced supervisors, participants engage in practical exercises, examining one another in small groups.

By the course's conclusion, participants will adeptly identify neck anatomical structures through ultrasound and conduct precise, systematic ultrasound examinations of the neck. The course culminates with a web-based knowledge assessment.

AFTER THE COURSE

Participants are encouraged to continue their own education and will have access to the course's lectures.
